Elle and Mike wedding-27

We are not always blessed with perfect weather conditions in the UK and as a  wedding photographer I have to deal with whatever the day brings. Wedding photography throws up all sorts of challenges and dealing with bad weather can be a big one…

I found myself looking out of the window and hoping that the weather forecast was wrong. The forecast was for high winds and heavy rain, exactly the weather you don’t need when photographing a wedding at the beautiful 11th Century St Edmund King and Martyr Church. The church nestles in picturesque woods at West Kingsdown, Kent which is just off of the M20 and a stones throw from Brandshatch racing circuit .

Some times the forecast is not accurate, today that was not the case. The wind arrived just before the rain, which arrived just before the guests. As they say in show-business “The show must go on.”, so on it went.

Guests arrived with umbrellas and summer attire, pausing quickly under the lynch gate for a quick photo before hurrying down to seek refuge in the church and wait with Mick for Elle to arrive. I was able to get a few photographs of the groom, his best man and captured a few photos of the usher and pageboys clowning around in front of my camera.

Mike was expectantly nervous as Elle kept with tradition and arrived half an hour later than expected. The relief on Mike`s face as Elle was accompanied down the aisle was obvious to all present. The service went without a hitch (well apart from the one they where there for) and Mike and Elle made the best of the situation, not for a moment allowing the wind and the rain to spoil their wedding day.

On leaving the church I was able to photograph the group pictures that Elle and Mike had requested using the shelter of the enormous yew tree just outside the church doors. Even with the rain continuing to hamper photo opportunities I managed to capture some candid shots as people braved the rain to enjoy an ice cream before leaving for the reception at Westerham Golf Course.
